Text Example: Using an Analytical Framework to Code a Professional Science Journalism Text

2023
Florentine Marnel Sterk, Merel M. van Goch

Summary

This science communication chapter uses a news article about microplastics in baby feces as a case study to demonstrate analytical coding of science journalism. The analysis shows how scientific findings about microplastic exposure in infants are framed and communicated to non-specialist audiences.

Abstract In this chapter, the analytical framework for popularization discourse is used to code the science journalism text “Baby Poop Is Loaded With Microplastics.” The chapter shows the kinds of insights that can be produced on the level of the individual text. Furthermore, presenting the in-depth analysis of a single text allows us to share what coding using our framework looks like on the level of the strategy.
