Global Ocean Governance and Ecological Civilization

2023
China Council for International Cooperation on Environment and Development (CCICED) Secretariat

Summary

This study examines global ocean governance frameworks and argues that achieving 'ecological civilization' requires coordinated international responses to mounting threats including climate change, ocean acidification, microplastic pollution, and overexploitation of marine resources.

Study Type Environmental

AbstractThe ocean is fundamentally important for humankind. The ocean is also vital for the world's economic development. A healthy ocean environment is a prerequisite for drawing on these direct and indirect benefits that the ocean provides. However, global ocean conditions are being seriously affected by large-scale environmental pressures such as global warming, increased ocean acidification under a continuously higher atmospheric carbon dioxide level, microplastics pollution, and overexploitation of natural resources.
