Spatial and temporal variabilities of suspended sediment and dissolved nutrients in the Ca River basin, North Central Vietnam
Summary
Researchers monitored suspended sediment and dissolved nutrient levels in the Ca River basin spanning Vietnam and Laos over a full year, finding significant spatial and seasonal variability driven by rainfall patterns and land use across this transboundary watershed.
Abstract The Ca River basin has an area of 27,200 km2 distributed across the territories of two countries: Vietnam (65.2%) and Lao (34.8%). Spatial and temporal variations in suspended sediment (SS) and dissolved nutrients (PO43-, NO3-, SiO2) were determined in two hydrological stations located along the Ca River 4–6 times per month in the rainy season and 1–4 times per month in the dry season, between the months of August 2017 and July 2018. A loading–discharge (L–Q) curve was used to analyze the correlation among water physicochemical parameters with seasonal river discharge. The results indicate that SS was higher in upstream flows compared to downstream flows, which is primarily due to erosion. Seasonal SS and dissolved phosphate have an inverse correlation trend to that of dissolved silica. Results revealed that the concentration of phosphate and SS was higher in the rainy season than in the dry season. This finding proves that rain washes particulate matter from the surface runoff into the Ca River. Significant correlations between discharge and dissolved nutrient load were observed. This study provides useful information regarding variations of SS and water physicochemical parameters with seasonal water discharge in the Ca River.

Influences of anthropogenic activities on water quality in the Saigon River, Ho Chi Minh City
Researchers assessed water quality across agricultural, industrial, residential, and less-impacted zones of the Saigon River in Ho Chi Minh City, measuring physicochemical parameters, nutrients, heavy metals, and antibiotic residues across rainy and dry seasons. Higher turbidity and BOD5 levels were observed in the rainy season, highlighting the influence of land use and seasonal variation on river water quality.
Deciphering the spatiotemporal dynamics and source characteristics of nutrients under anthropogenic pressure in Taipu River, China
Researchers assessed seasonal and spatial nutrient dynamics in Taipu River (China) from October 2020 to July 2021 using water quality indices and principal component analysis. Results identified agricultural runoff and sewage as dominant nutrient sources, with spatial patterns reflecting land use along the river.
Distribution and Characteristics of Microplastics in Nhue - Day River Basin, Vietnam
Researchers investigated the distribution and characteristics of microplastics in the Nhue-Day River Basin in Vietnam, finding that microplastic abundance varies with seasonal changes and anthropogenic activities, posing threats to the ecosystem and the roughly 12 million people who depend on this river.
Assessment of Hydrochemical Variability in the Svete River and Its Tributaries Under Anthropogenic Pressure
Researchers assessed the hydrochemical variability of the Svete River and its tributaries under anthropogenic pressure, monitoring sixteen sites along the main channel and tributary junctions in intensive agricultural regions. The study revealed how tributary inflows alter the hydrochemical properties of the main channel, documenting the cumulative impact of agricultural land use on river water quality.
Phytoplankton characterization in a tropical tidal river impacted by a megacity: the case of the Saigon River (Southern Vietnam)
Scientists studied how phytoplankton communities vary seasonally and spatially in the Saigon River, Vietnam, finding that urban pollution from Ho Chi Minh City significantly shapes which species dominate. The study provides a baseline for tracking ecological change in a highly impacted tropical river.
