Metal Free, White LED Induced, Room Temperature Degradation of Methyl Methacrylate - Methyl Haloacrylate Copolymers
Summary
Researchers developed a metal-free method using LED light and organic dyes to break down halogenated plastic polymers at room temperature. This novel degradation approach could support plastic waste management without the energy-intensive conditions required by conventional methods.
White LED-induced and metal-free degradation method for PMMA derivatives containing halogens at the main chain using organodyes was developed and reported. Physical properties of synthesized copolymers and the kinetics of the method were investigated by DSC, TGA, 1H-NMR and GPC analyses. Degradations up to 80% were observed at ambient temperature.
