Unlocking nanoplastic removal from landfill leachate - a dual-layer adsorptive PES@PMACZ@MOF & repulsive self-assembled mesoporous silica modified matrix membrane
Summary
Scientists developed a new filter membrane that can remove almost all micro- and nanoplastics (98.8% to 100%) from landfill wastewater, tiny plastic particles that can leach into groundwater and eventually end up in our drinking water and food supply. This filter is special because it stays effective over repeated use, resists clogging, and works well across different water conditions, making it a promising tool for cleaning up plastic pollution before it spreads further into our environment and bodies.
• PMACZ 20 /SAM-DMS 3 N 2 nanopore membrane achieved 98.8 % nanoplastic and 100 % microplastic rejection in SLL. • PMACZ 20 /SAM-DMS 3 N 2 membrane maintained 81 % normalized flow after 24 h, demonstrating strong antifouling resistance. • PMACZ 20 /SAM-DMS 3 N 2 membrane sustained over 98.8 % NPs rejection across five filtration cycles without chemical cleaning. • PMACZ 20 /SAM-DMS3N 2 membrane enabled up to 93 % MPs and 50 % NPs release, confirming effective physical regeneration. • PMACZ 20 /SAM-DMS 3 N 2 nanopore membrane exhibited stable rejection performance across pH 2–10, with peak efficiency at pH of 7.
