Estuarine Sedimentary Microplastics from City to Sea: Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island, USA

Victoria M. Fulfer, J. P. Walsh

Summary

This is a duplicate dataset entry for the Narragansett Bay estuarine microplastics study (same as 45413). The dataset documents microplastic concentrations and polymer types found in sediments from shoreline to offshore locations in the bay. These data support understanding of how microplastics move from urban land sources through estuaries toward the ocean.

Study Type Environmental

Count and polymer characterization data for microplastics extracted from shoreline and estuarine sediments around Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island, USA. Microplastics (63µm - 5 mm) were extracted from sediment using a dense solution of sodium iodide (NaI) followed by enumeration via microscopy and polymer characterization via Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR)(Shimadzu IRTracer-100). Concentrations are reported in # MP particles per kg dry weight (DW) sediment.
