원 헬스(One Health)란 인간, 동물과 환경의 건강이 개별로 분리되어 있는 것이 아니라 유기적으로 하나로 연결되어 있고 상호 영향을 준다는 의미이다. 2019년 중국 우한에서 시작된 호흡기 감염질환인 코로나 바이러스(COVID-19)가 전 세계적으로 확산되었고 이로 인해 많은 수의 사람이 사망하였다. 이를 계기로 감염경로인 동물의 건강이 사람의 건강과 밀접하게 연관되어 있으며, 이들의 수용체인 생태계(환경)와의 상호작용을 고려한 통합적 관리의 필요성이 더욱 크게 대두되었다. 특히 인수공통감염병, 의약 항생제, 마약, 미세플라스틱 등은 사람은 물론 동물과 생태계에 공통적으로 악영향을 주는 것으로 알려진다. 여기서는 최근 관심을 받고 있는 신종오염물질인 미세플라스틱에 대하여 원 헬스 관점에서 동물, 사람 그리고 환경에 미치는 영향과 이들 사이의 상호작용을 살펴보았다. 이를 통해 미세플라스틱에 대한 향후 대처방안 마련에 기초를 제공하도록 하였다.
