Review: Environmental toxicology of marine microplastic pollution — R0/PR3

2023

AI summary Read the abstract

This is a third peer review document associated with the same marine microplastic toxicology review, which covers bioaccumulation and biological effects of microplastics across multiple marine organism groups. The review it supports is a significant synthesis of evidence on how microplastics harm marine ecosystems. As a peer review artefact, it is not original research but reflects the rigour applied to publishing key microplastics science.

Over the past decade, there have been increasing recognition and concern of the toxicological impacts of microplastics (MPs) in the environment, which have been widely found in various marine environments from estuary to deep oceans. Numerous toxicological studies have been conducted on the impacts of MPs on various marine organisms, especially phytoplankton, zooplankton, bivalves, and fish of different trophic levels. These studies mainly focused on the measurements of MPs bioaccumulation and their resulting biological impacts at molecular, metabolic, biochemical, physiological, and organismic levels. This review examines the various studies conducted over the recent years on the toxicology of MPs in different marine organisms, particularly on the bioaccumulation and toxicity of MPs. The impacts of MPs on marine organisms are diverse, and the complexity of organism physiology as well as MPs physical and chemical properties need to be considered. Future studies should consider the environmental relevance of toxicological research and the development of quantitative tools to model the transport, bioaccumulation, and toxicity of MPs. These are important for the real environmental risk assessments of MPs in the marine environments.

Recommendation: Environmental toxicology of marine microplastic pollution — R0/PR4

AI summary Read the abstract

This is a peer review document for a review of marine microplastic environmental toxicology. The underlying review synthesises evidence on microplastic accumulation and toxic effects in phytoplankton, zooplankton, bivalves, and fish. Like other peer review artefacts in this set, it is relevant to microplastics but is not original research.

Decision: Environmental toxicology of marine microplastic pollution — R0/PR5

AI summary Read the abstract

This is a peer review decision document for a comprehensive review of marine microplastic toxicology, covering bioaccumulation and toxic effects in phytoplankton, zooplankton, bivalves, and fish across trophic levels. The underlying review synthesises evidence that microplastic impacts span molecular, biochemical, and organismal levels and calls for more environmentally relevant experimental designs. It represents an important quality-control step in publishing a key synthesis of marine microplastic risk science.

Review: Environmental toxicology of marine microplastic pollution — R1/PR7

AI summary Read the abstract

This review comprehensively examines marine microplastic toxicology, covering how microplastics accumulate in organisms from phytoplankton to fish and cause harm across molecular, biochemical, and physiological levels. It also emphasises the role of microplastics as carriers of toxic chemical additives and adsorbed pollutants, making them a compounded environmental hazard throughout ocean ecosystems.

Environmental toxicology of marine microplastic pollution

AI summary Read the abstract

This review summarized a decade of research on the environmental toxicology of marine microplastic pollution across different ocean organisms and trophic levels. Researchers found that microplastics can accumulate in marine life from phytoplankton to fish, causing molecular, metabolic, and physiological harm. The study emphasizes that understanding these toxic effects is essential for assessing the broader ecological risks of plastic pollution in ocean environments.
