Author comment: Addressing climate change mitigation: Implications for the sustainable alternatives to plastics — R0/PR1
Summary
This author comment accompanies a study examining the relationship between plastic pollution, microplastics, and climate change. The paper argues for more research into how microplastics and greenhouse gas emissions from plastics interact, and evaluates sustainable alternatives to conventional plastics from a life cycle perspective.
Accumulation of plastic waste is a global issue, and plastic particles are detected in different environments. The recent COVID-19 pandemic has been attributed to significant piling up of plastic waste and debris (including micro- and nano-sized plastic particles), yet the manufacturing of plastic products is still expected to grow. With the continuation of the COVID-19 pandemic, the use and disposal of plastics has resulted in increasing plastic pollution. There has been a lack of research into the effects of climate change on microplastics and, likewise, the effects of microplastics on climate change. This article aims to examine the pros and cons of sustainable alternatives to plastics in addressing the climate change issue. Special attention is devoted to the correlation between climate change and microplastic pollution. This perspective also serves to spawn ideas for mitigating greenhouse gas emissions caused by plastics by identifying the life cycle stages of plastic production.

Addressing climate change mitigation: Implications for the sustainable alternatives to plastics
This review examines the two-way relationship between plastic pollution and climate change, noting that microplastics both result from and may contribute to greenhouse gas emissions across the plastic lifecycle. It argues that sustainable alternatives to plastics must be evaluated holistically — considering climate impact alongside pollution reduction — to avoid trading one problem for another.
Review: Addressing climate change mitigation: Implications for the sustainable alternatives to plastics — R1/PR8
This peer review document evaluates a study examining sustainable alternatives to plastics in the context of climate change mitigation, assessing whether the analysis adequately addresses the bidirectional relationship between microplastic pollution -- which has increased due to COVID-19 pandemic plastic use -- and climate change dynamics.
Author comment: Addressing climate change mitigation: Implications for the sustainable alternatives to plastics — R1/PR6
This author commentary discusses the global challenge of plastic waste accumulation and the role of the COVID-19 pandemic in accelerating plastic pollution, including microplastic and nanoplastic particles. It calls for greater research into sustainable alternatives to plastics as part of climate change mitigation strategies.
Review: Addressing climate change mitigation: Implications for the sustainable alternatives to plastics — R1/PR7
This peer review document evaluates a study examining sustainable alternatives to plastics in the context of climate change mitigation, with the reviewer assessing the paper's treatment of how increasing plastic pollution, accelerated by COVID-19 pandemic-related plastic use, intersects with climate change and whether proposed alternatives are adequately analyzed.
Review: Addressing climate change mitigation: Implications for the sustainable alternatives to plastics — R0/PR2
This peer review evaluates a paper on sustainable plastic alternatives and their role in climate change mitigation, discussing how replacing conventional plastics with biodegradable options could reduce both plastic waste and greenhouse gas emissions. The review contributes to scientific discourse on whether bioplastics can genuinely reduce the environmental burden of plastic pollution.
