Characteristics of sediments and microplastic load in the beach and subtidal sediments of Lopar, Rab Island
Summary
Researchers analyzed beach and subtidal sediment samples from three coves on Rab Island, Croatia, finding high microplastic loads at all sites regardless of water depth. Tourism and industry were identified as the primary pollution sources, with fibers and fragments as the most common particle types.

Macrodebris and microplastics from beaches in Slovenia
Researchers surveyed both macrodebris on beaches and microplastics in shoreline and sublittoral sediments in Slovenia, providing the first such dataset for this short Adriatic coastline. The study found plastic contamination present even in areas with low tourism activity, suggesting diffuse sources beyond local littering.
Karakterizacija mikroplastike iz sedimenata plaže
Researchers characterized microplastics in beach sediment samples from Croatia, finding diverse shapes, colors, and polymer types consistent with fragmented packaging and textile debris. The study contributes to understanding microplastic contamination on Adriatic Sea beaches.
Marine litter in sediments related to ecological features in impacted sites and marine protected areas (Croatia)
Researchers found that marine litter including microplastics was present in shallow sediments across Croatian Adriatic sites, with tourism-stressed areas showing higher contamination levels than marine protected areas, highlighting the influence of human pressure on plastic accumulation.
Microplastics in Surface Sediments along the Montenegrin Coast, Adriatic Sea: Types, Occurrence, and Distribution
This is the first study to document microplastics in surface sediments along the coast of Montenegro in the Adriatic Sea. Fibers and fragments were the dominant types found, highlighting that microplastic contamination has reached this less-studied part of the Mediterranean.
Plastic litter in sediments from the Croatian marine protected area of the natural park of Telaščica bay (Adriatic Sea)
Researchers established baseline plastic litter levels in sediments from the Croatian Natural Park of Telascica Bay in the Adriatic Sea, finding that microplastics constituted 88.7% and mesoplastics 11.3% of total items across all sampled locations, with no macroplastics detected.
