Analysis of the Influence of Microplastics on the Human Body
Summary
This study examined microplastic contamination in the bottom sediments of Lake Ladoga and the Gulf of Finland, identifying plastic particles of various shapes, colors, and sizes and highlighting the food-chain route as the primary pathway of microplastic exposure to humans. The authors call for expanded monitoring and IR spectroscopy analysis to better characterize particle composition, and propose containment strategies for further spread.
The ways in which microplastics enter the environment are considered, in particular, the pollution of the world's oceans and its impact on living organisms living in in the continental waters of the Gulf of Finland and Lake Ladoga. The characteristics of microplastic particles, their use in industry and their threatening effect on the human body through the food chain are presented. Using the methodology for studying bottom sediment samples, an analysis of the content of microplastic particles in the bottom sediments of Lake Ladoga was carried out. Samples of bottom sediments were studied, and as a result 32of the study, microplastic particles of various shapes, colors and sizes were identified. To obtain more accurate information about the chemical composition of particles, it is necessary to conduct an analysis using an IR spectrometer. Methods have been proposed to combat the spread of microplastics in the environment. Further research into this issue is envisaged.
