Summary

This paper is not primarily about microplastics; it is an Indonesian community outreach report about river conservation awareness and household waste management near the Brantas River, with only brief mention of plastic recycling.

Study Type Environmental

The Brantas River originates at the foot of Mount Arjuno, precisely in Sumber Brantas Village, Bumiaji District, Batu City. If damage occurs in the upstream part of the river, the downstream river will also be disturbed. The main problem of river damage is the entry of rubbish into the river body. This community service activity places more emphasis on managing waste resulting from community activities around the river. According to information from the community around the river, waste from baby and adult diapers (pampers) and sanitary napkins cannot be managed properly. The solution given is that the contents (gel) of diapers containing dirt "urine, feces or menstrual blood" should be removed and buried in the ground, while the plastic part is cleaned and recycled. The paper and its dirt are buried in the ground, then the plastic is cleaned and collected as recycled plastic. Glass waste must be given special handling when thrown into the trash, so that it does not injure the cleaning staff. The results obtained from this activity, namely the 2023 FPIK UB Lecturer Service Grant Program, were carried out well, the community understood how to handle waste so that it does not pollute the environment, especially rivers.
