Microbial degradation of polypropylene.

BIOINFOLET - A Quarterly Journal of Life Sciences 2024
Shaguftanaz S. Shaikh, G.R. Pathade

Summary

Researchers isolated bacteria from seawater and screened them for the ability to degrade polypropylene, using weight loss measurements and SEM analysis to evaluate degradation potential. The isolate with the strongest polypropylene degradation activity was identified as Stenotrophomonas sp., demonstrating a safe and convenient microbial pathway for breaking down this common microplastic polymer.

Polymers

Polypropylene is one of the microplastics. Microbial degradation of polypropylene is safe and convenient process. During present study the bacterial species responsible for plastic degradation were isolated from sea water. The isolated bacteria were screened and evaluated for degradation of plastic by weight loss method and SEM analysis. The isolate having potential of polypropylene degradation was identified as Stenotrophomonas sp.
