Summary

Researchers delivered environmental education interventions to residents of Dusun Krajan, Banyuwangi Regency, Indonesia, to address low awareness and poor management of inorganic waste and microplastics at the household level. The programme aimed to increase community knowledge of the environmental impacts of plastic pollution and promote behavioural change in waste handling practices.

Krajan Hamlet, located in Jambewangi Village, is one of the areas facing significant challenges in managing household waste, particularly inorganic waste and microplastics. The lack of education regarding the negative impacts of waste on the environment contributes to the low public awareness in sorting and managing waste responsibly. Through this community service program, efforts were made to improve residents’ knowledge and awareness of waste management—especially regarding inorganic and microplastic waste—by using an educational approach that encouraged active community participation. Activities included outreach, interactive visual presentations, group discussions, and the screening of educational media with 30 participants. The implementation of this program demonstrated an increase in public understanding of the dangers of microplasticsfrom 40% to 80%, as well as the emergence of community initiatives to repurpose household waste into more useful products. This educational and practical approach proved effective in fostering behavioral changes that support long-term environmental sustainability.
