Summary

Researchers investigated the type, abundance, and depth distribution of microplastics in the water column of the Siak River in Riau Province, Indonesia, sampling at three stations across three depths (surface, 5 m, and 10 m) monthly from January to March 2023, identifying fibers, fragments, and films throughout all locations and depths.

Researchers examined the types and abundance of microplastics at five stations across different depths in the Koto Panjang hydroelectric reservoir in Riau Province, Indonesia, finding fiber, fragment, and film morphologies with film type most dominant. Microplastic abundance was highest at station 5 and varied with depth, indicating spatial heterogeneity in contamination across the reservoir.

The Abundance of Microplastics in Sediment Siak River Pekanbaru City

Researchers assessed microplastic abundance in sediments of the Siak River, Pekanbaru City, examining the river as a pathway for land-based plastic waste to accumulate in aquatic sediment reservoirs given high water utilization activity along its banks.

Analysis of Abundance and Distribution of Microplastics in Sediments of Sail River, Pekanbaru City, Riau

Researchers analyzed sediment samples from the Sail River in Pekanbaru, Indonesia, and found microplastic contamination at all sampling stations, with abundance increasing toward downstream areas. Concentrations ranged from 5,335 to 21,374 particles per kilogram of dry sediment, consisting of fragments, fibers, and films. The study suggests that growing urban activities such as housing, shops, and restaurants along the river are contributing to the increasing microplastic pollution.

The abundance of microplastics in Siak tributary sediments in the watershed area, Pekanbaru City, Riau (Case Study Sago River)

This study quantified microplastics in sediments of the Sago River, a tributary of the Siak River in Indonesia, finding elevated concentrations linked to dense human activities in the catchment. The results highlight tributaries as important entry points for microplastics into larger river systems.

Identifikasi Kandungan Mikroplastik pada Perairan Sungai

Water samples from the Musi River in South Sumatra contained microplastics in all four forms — fibers, films, fragments, and pellets — with fibers most abundant at 5 particles per 100 mL, confirming microplastic presence in this Indonesian waterway.
