Review of emerging contaminants sources, effects, and removal methods
Summary
This review categorizes emerging contaminants including microplastics, personal care products, pesticides, and pharmaceuticals, summarizing sources, environmental occurrence, and available treatment technologies for their removal from water.
Microplastics, personal care products, insecticides, industrial chemicals, and medications are just a few of the many compounds that fall under the category of emerging contaminants. The negative impacts of new chemicals in sewage on the water environment have emerged as a concern in recent decades. Due to its complex chemical properties and often low concentration in the aqueous phase, there is a lack of standardized and effective methods for determination. Understanding the various detection ranges in various water bodies, encouraging research on the toxic effects and toxicity of emerging contaminants, and comprehending the capacity of various treatment technologies to lower their concentrations to non-toxic levels are the main foci of this paper in this regard. The essay examines the obstacles in current research on developing contaminants, examines the toxicity of new contaminants and their available removal technologies, and summarises and projects the current limitations. It is anticipated to help with the management of new toxins in wastewater.
