Summary

This review addresses microplastic impacts on freshwater ecosystems, covering morphological and physiological toxicity to fish, food chain implications, and potential strategies to mitigate plastic pollution in urban water bodies.

The microplastic footprints in urban agglomerations in water bodies are strongly influenced by anthropogenic factors. A lot of focus is currently being paid to microplastic (MP) pollution. There is growing concern regarding the potential toxicity of MPs to organisms at the morphological and physiological levels. Fish is a major source of protein for humans; hence the existence and ecotoxicological effects of MPs in fish may have an impact on the safety of aquatic food supplies. The present chapter will provide an overview about: 1) potentially harmful effects that MPs may have on aquatic flora and wildlife; 2) the primary methods for eliminating microplastic from water bodies; and 3) provide a case study to demonstrate how this is achieved.

Microplastics in Aquatic Environments and Their Toxicological Implications for Fish

This review summarizes research on microplastic occurrence in freshwater and marine environments and the toxicological risks they pose to fish, examining both direct physical effects and the role of plastics as vectors for chemical pollutants. The authors highlight that freshwater fish are particularly vulnerable given the high loads of microplastics in rivers receiving wastewater.
