Summary

This Turkish review examines microplastic contamination in surface water sources, tracing how plastic waste introduced since the 1950s degrades into microplastics that are transported to aquatic environments via river runoff and urban-industrial discharges, where they accumulate and adversely affect aquatic life.

"Plastics, whose production started in the 1950s and whose use has increased over the years, have become a major environmental problem on a global scale due to the plastic wastes generated as a result of their use, although they have an important place in the economy today. Manufactured or processed permanent solid materials discharged or discharged into the sea, coastal and other receiving environments contain plastic wastes, which are transported to the aquatic environment by surface runoff from rivers or directly by urban-industrial discharges and are broken into small pieces by the effects of currents, waves and winds and accumulate in water and sediment, causing pollution and adverse effects on living life. Considering that microplastic pollution in marine environments is mostly caused by rivers, microplastic control in inland waters is of great importance. Although there are studies on microplastics in marine environments, since the number of studies conducted in inland waters is limited, there is a need for studies in which inland waters, coastal and transitional waters are evaluated with an integrated approach. In this context, a comprehensive study on microplastics in river water, transitional water, coastal water and sediment and biota matrices in the Kızılırmak River, Susurluk River, Gediz River, Dalaman Stream and Dilderesi pilot study areas was carried out between 2020-2022. According to the monitoring results carried out within the scope of the study, the highest and lowest amount of microplastics were observed in Dilderesi and Dalaman Stream pilot areas, respectively, although microplastics in fiber and fragment types and LDPE and PE properties were frequently prominent."
