Microplastic removal and interception: Current research funded by the national sea grant office (USA)
Summary
This review examines microplastic removal and interception research projects funded through the US National Sea Grant Office under a 22 million dollar Marine Debris Challenge competition, covering new technologies for laundry and stormwater microplastic capture, tributary filtration, and wastewater treatment improvements.
Through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and the Inflation Reduction Act, the National Sea Grant Office (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, USA) has funded several research projects focused on the removal and interception of microplastics in its $22 million FY 2022-2023 Marine Debris Challenge competition. New technologies and innovations to prevent the leakage of microplastics in laundry and stormwater runoff, filter microplastics from polluted tributaries, and reduce microplastics in wastewater treatment facilities will be discussed. These projects geographically span the USA and involve partners from academia, the private sector, and local government. Also see: https://micro2024.sciencesconf.org/559017/document
