Distribution of surface microplastics in the pacific ocean, sea of okhotsk and sea of japan
Summary
Researchers sampled surface microplastics (0.5 to 5 mm) at 98 stations across the Pacific Ocean, Sea of Okhotsk, and Sea of Japan during an August 2023 cruise, using FT-IR ATR spectroscopy to identify polymer types among over 4,000 detected particles and map regional pollution distributions.
Data on surface microplastic concentrations (0.5 - 5 mm) in the Pacific Ocean, Sea of Okhotsk and Sea of Japan were obtained. Sampling was carried out during cruise 23/4 of the R/V P̈rofessor Multanovskyïn August 2023 using a neuston net (330 µm). A Perkin Elmer FT-IR ATR Spectrum Two spectrometer was used to identify the polymer composition of microplastic particles. More than 4000 potential microplastic particles were detected at 98 stations. The water area of the southeastern tip of the Kamchatka is insignificantly polluted with microplastics. Surface water samples are almost free of microplastic particles. At 20 Also see: https://micro2024.sciencesconf.org/559731/document

Distribution of surface microplastics in the pacific ocean, sea of okhotsk and sea of japan
Researchers collected surface microplastic concentration data from the Pacific Ocean, Sea of Okhotsk, and Sea of Japan during an August 2023 research cruise using neuston net sampling and FT-IR ATR spectroscopy to identify polymer composition across 98 stations. They detected over 4,000 potential microplastic particles, with the southeastern Kamchatka Peninsula area showing distinct distribution patterns.
An Integrated Assessment of Microplastic Pollution in Coastal Surface Water and Sediment of Japan
Researchers conducted a comprehensive survey of microplastic pollution in surface water and sediment at 15 coastal locations across Japan, from Hokkaido to Okinawa. They extracted over 53,000 suspected microplastic particles and identified the most common polymers using FTIR spectroscopy. The study provides an integrated baseline dataset for understanding the extent and distribution of microplastic contamination along Japanese coastlines.
Characterization of plastic debris from surface waters of the eastern Arabian Sea–Indian Ocean
Researchers characterized floating plastic debris from surface waters of the eastern Arabian Sea, finding that the microplastic size fraction (0.5-5 mm) was most prevalent at over 50% of total debris, with ATR-FTIR analysis identifying polyethylene and polypropylene as dominant polymer types. The findings document widespread plastic contamination in a poorly studied region of the Indian Ocean.
Systematical insights into distribution and characteristics of microplastics in near-surface waters from the East Asian Seas to the Arctic Central Basin
Researchers systematically mapped microplastic distribution in near-surface waters from the East Asian Seas to the Arctic Central Basin, detecting particles at 93.9% of sites with an average of 2.91 items/m3 and finding that fragments and fibers dominated across the entire transect.
An integrated assessment of microplastic pollution in coastal surface water and sediment of Japan
Researchers conducted a comprehensive survey of microplastic pollution across 14 coastal locations around Japan from Hokkaido to Okinawa, measuring concentrations of 288.7 g/km2 in surface water and 1,185 kg/km2 in sediment and characterizing polymer types, shapes, and size distributions.
