Quantifying, and assessing the impact of, microplastics in terrestrial samples
Summary
Researchers developed methodologies to quantify microplastics (1 to 1000 micrometers) in terrestrial woodland environments, addressing the significant knowledge gap about microplastic concentrations and ecological impacts in soil ecosystems compared to the more extensively studied aquatic compartments.
Microplastics, particles 1 ¡ 1000 µm, are an emerging pollutant. Microplastics in sediment and aquatic environments have dominated research, leaving the world with an inadequate understanding of microplastics in terrestrial environments such as woodlands. Terrestrial ecosystems are crucial for the continued well-being of many species and functions and so it is important that the concentration and effects of microplastics in terrestrial environments are given more attention. This research will fill a knowledge gap by developing effective, innovative methodologies to further our understanding of the scale and impact of microplastics in terrestrial environments and supporting the creation of policies to better regulate microplastics.
