Microplastics (MPs) are increasingly found in natural environments, including freshwater ecosystems, which serve as a receiver, transporter, and sink for MP pollution, as well as connect the terrestrial, atmospheric, and marine environment. Lakes are especially heavily affected by MP pollution, as MP concentrations are generally higher in low energy environments, and MP particles are captured and deposited into sediments of enclosed waters easily. Yet, knowledge on the life cycle of MPs in these complex systems is limited, partially due to lacking data from ecosystem-wide experiments.
