Summary

Researchers developed an integrated system dynamics and input-output model to simulate global marine plastic waste trends through 2050, quantifying the economic effort required from producers and consumers to achieve plastic removal targets across shoreline, coastal, and offshore ocean domains.

Study Type Environmental

We have developed an integrated SD/IO model, combining system dynamics (SD) with a macroeconomic input-output (IO) framework, to simulate global marine plastic waste trends through 2050. This model captures the movement of floating macroplastics and microplastics across three surface domains: shoreline deposition, coastal waters, and offshore waters within the global ocean. By utilizing this model, we can assess the effort required to achieve plastic waste removal targets and analyze the corresponding economic impacts on producers and consumers. These impacts vary depending on the cost-sharing rules adopted. Also see: https://micro2024.sciencesconf.org/564047/document
