Evaluating marine litter impact on coastal areas in italy, lebanon, and tunisia within the COMMON project
Summary
Researchers monitored marine litter across key environmental compartments including beaches, sea surface, and fish gastrointestinal tracts at five coastal pilot areas in Italy, Tunisia, and Lebanon as part of the COMMON project applying Integrated Coastal Zone Management principles. They found that plastic constituted approximately 80% of marine litter collected, providing baseline data to support cross-Mediterranean strategies for improving coastal environmental performance.
The COMMON project aims at applying the Integrated Coastal Zone Management principles to the marine litter management, improving the environmental performance of 5 pilot coastal areas in Italy (Maremma and Salento), Tunisia (Kuriat Island and Monastir) and Lebanon (Tyre Coast National Reserve), testing a model that could be transferred to the whole Mediterranean area. The monitoring activities were focused on the analyses of marine litter in key compartments: beaches, sea surface, and ingestion of microplastics by fish species. The beach litter monitoring involved three countries, and eleven beaches. Plastic constitutes 80 Also see: https://micro2024.sciencesconf.org/559371/document
