Plastika se zahvaljujući svojoj rasprostranjenosti može smatrati materijalom današnjice što opravdava činjenicu da velika njezina količina završava u vodenom okolišu, točnije površinskim vodotocima. Njezinim raspadom nastaju sitniji dijelovi (mikrovlakna, fragmenti...) veličine od 1 μm do 5 mm koji se nazivaju sekundarnom mikroplastikom. Primarnu mikroplastiku čine sve čestice (mikrozrna...) koje se nalaze u potrošačkim i komercijalnim proizvodima poput kozmetike. Razlikuju se brojni potencijalni izvori, a najčešće se navode plastični proizvodi, industrija, otpadne vode te uređaji za njihovo pročišćavanje. Mikroplastika je prema dosadašnjim istraživanjima pronađena u nekim od najvećih europskih rijeka poput Rajne i Elbe te u ostalim rijekama diljem svijeta. S obzirom na kemijski sastav i vrstu adsorbiranih tvari, ostavlja posljedice po vodeni ekosustav (bioakumulacija, smanjenje populacija), ali i zdravlje ljudi. Kako bi se smanjilo i spriječilo onečišćenje, donose se mjere od strane političkih organizacija.
