Summary

This study examines the threats posed by plastic waste to sea turtles and other living species in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, reviewing how uncontrolled plastic production and release leads to degradation into microplastics that contaminate entire food webs. The authors assess the documented harms to sea turtles from ingestion and entanglement and call for stronger controls on plastic production and disposal.

Body Systems

Plastic waste enters people's daily lives in a very uncontrolled way. Their waste decomposes in various ways in both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems and pollutes the entire ecosystem. The production and distribution of plastic products cannot be controlled and their release into ecosystems as waste is increasing day by day. This situation will become a major problem for the environment in the coming years. Aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems shared by humans and nature will be transformed into uninhabitable ecosystems by the destruction of plastic waste into micro- and nanoplastics. This is because this sector makes new investments every year. Since 2010, the plastics industry has invested 180 billion dollars, which will lead to a 40 per cent increase in plastics in the coming years. Plastic waste is the biggest threat to sea turtles and humans and the other creatures that humans share their lives with. As they consume indigestible plastic waste (micro- and nanoplastics) as food, their digestive system is blocked, leading to their death. In the process, turtles and fish, which are among the most important elements of marine ecosystems, are severely affected. In addition, the phytoplankton and zooplankton world is also severely damaged. In this context, humans are also severely affected.
