Summary

Researchers assessed microplastic contamination in surface water and sediment at 18 sites along the Tien River basin in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam, finding concentrations of 218 microplastics per cubic meter in water and 1,159 microplastics per kilogram dry weight in sediment. Fibers were the predominant shape across all samples, with white particles most common among six identified colors.

Study Type Environmental

This study evaluated microplastic levels in surface water and sediment in the Tien River basin (a branch of the Mekong River flowing through Vietnam). Water and sediment samples were taken from 18 sites along the Tien River basin. Samples were treated based on Fenton reactions (H₂O₂/Fe²⁺) and density separation with ZnCl₂. The results show that microplastic levels in surface water and sediment are 218 microplastics/m³ and 1159 microplastics/kg dry weight, respectively. Fibers are the predominant shape of microplastics in all samples. The colors of the microplastics were evaluated, with six colors identified: white, green, blue, black, gray, and red, with white being the most common. This research provides a valuable database on microplastic pollution in surface water and sediment in the Tien River basin.
