The role of biodegradable plastics in the global plastic future

AI summary Read the abstract

Researchers analyzed the real-world role of biodegradable plastics in global plastic waste and found that while they offer environmental benefits, they are unlikely to solve the plastic crisis on their own without systemic changes to production and waste management. Their potential to reduce pollution depends heavily on proper disposal infrastructure and industrial composting conditions.

Biodegradable plastics offer potential solutions for mitigating plastic waste pollution, given their superior biodegradability. However, although their properties and environmental performance have been extensively examined, their roles in the global plastic industry remain unclear. In this Perspective, we discuss the nuanced role of biodegradable plastics by synthesizing material flow and environmental data to project global plastic waste accumulation, greenhouse gas emissions, aquatic ecotoxicity, cumulative energy demand and water footprint through 2050. Biodegradable plastics could reduce plastic waste accumulation by 27% compared with business-as-usual by 2050, with reductions of up to 65% when combined with recycling and incinerating conventional plastic waste. Proper end-of-life treatments, such as industrial composting and anaerobic digestion, are critical for realizing biodegradation benefits. Substituting conventional plastics with biodegradable alternatives could reduce ecotoxicity, primarily from microplastics, by up to 34% by 2050. Achieving these benefits requires investment in end-of-life infrastructure, standardized biodegradability certifications with localized considerations and consumer education. Although bio-based, biodegradable plastics have a limited impact on overall energy demand, they consume substantial water for biomass production. Future research should address economic and policy challenges, expand the functional scope of biodegradable plastics, identify water-efficient feedstock and enhance methods for assessing broader environmental and social impacts of plastics. Biodegradable plastics could help reduce plastic waste pollution, but their role in the global plastic industry and environmental impacts remains unclear. This Perspective evaluates their contribution to plastic waste accumulation, greenhouse gas emissions, aquatic ecotoxicity, cumulative energy demand and water footprint through 2050.

Plastics of the Future? The Impact of Biodegradable Polymers on the Environment

AI summary Read the abstract

Biodegradable polymers are increasingly proposed as sustainable alternatives to conventional plastics, but their actual degradation rates and ecological impacts under real environmental conditions vary widely and are often misrepresented. Without rigorous standards for biodegradability claims, some alternatives may simply generate a different form of microplastic pollution rather than solving the underlying problem.

Biodegradable Bio-Based Plastics Toward Climate Change Mitigation

AI summary Read the abstract

Researchers reviewed the development and applications of biodegradable, bio-based plastics — including PLA, PHA, and starch-based materials — as replacements for fossil-fuel-derived polyethylene, polypropylene, and PET in the context of climate change mitigation and plastic pollution reduction. Transitioning to genuinely biodegradable plastics could substantially reduce the long-term accumulation of persistent microplastic particles that degrade as conventional plastics fragment over decades to centuries.

Biodegradable Bio-Based Plastics Toward Climate Change Mitigation

AI summary Read the abstract

Researchers assessed the potential of biodegradable, bio-based plastics as climate-friendly alternatives to fossil-fuel-derived plastics like polyethylene and polypropylene. Replacing conventional plastics with materials that break down naturally is one of the most promising long-term strategies for reducing the microplastic pollution that accumulates in soils, water, and living organisms.
