Development of Garbage Collecting Robot for Marine Microplastics
Summary
Researchers developed a garbage-collecting robot designed to remove plastic debris from coastal areas before it degrades into microplastics, addressing the logistical challenge of cleaning extensive shorelines with minimal human labor and resources.
Plastic debris scattered along coastal areas is a major source to microplastic pollution, making its effective removal a critical environmental challenge. However, cleaning extensive shorelines requires substantial manpower and resources, posing significant logistical difficulties. To address this issue, we are developing a robotic system designed to efficiently collect plastic debris from coastal regions. This study first introduces the overall system configuration, including insights from previous research. Next, we propose a versatile coastal cleaning robot system based on ROS2 (Robot Operating System 2). Specifically, the system integrates remote control via commercial cellular networks and autonomous operation to ensure stable controllability across various network environments. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed system is effective for practical applications.
