Summary
This study developed a framework for quantifying plastic emissions from production through environmental release, proposing a plastic pollution equivalent metric analogous to carbon equivalents in climate science to enable standardized cross-sector comparisons. Establishing a unified emissions accounting system is a prerequisite for setting enforceable plastic reduction targets and measuring progress toward reducing MNP accumulation in ecosystems and human bodies.
