Microplastics in Drinking Water
Summary
This review examines published evidence on microplastic presence in tap water, bottled water, and drinking water treatment plants, summarizing known pathways by which microplastics enter drinking water supplies and discussing potential human health impacts and future research priorities.
Plastics easily enter the environment through waste water, enter the food chain and reach the organism. The problem is represented by parts up to 5 mm in size (microplastics). The paper presents published evidence on the presence of microplastics in tap water, bottled water and at the entrance and exit of drinking water treatment plants; about the routes by which microplastics reach those destinations; on the impact of microplastics on people through drinking water; and suggestions for research directions and problem-solving approaches.
