Summary

Researchers reviewed how developed countries manage emerging pollutants through circular economy frameworks and applied those lessons to a case study in Northern Cyprus. The study assessed policies for handling contaminants including microplastics, pharmaceuticals, and industrial chemicals. The findings suggest that circular economy approaches can be adapted for developing regions to more effectively manage emerging pollutant threats.

Emerging pollutants (EPs) represent contemporary challenges arising from the advancement of medicines, industries, and related factors, posing threats to both human and environmental well-being. This research project employs extensive library sources, including books, academic papers, and authoritative reports, to assess the impact and effectiveness of policies implemented in developing countries for managing EPs through a circular economy framework. Subsequently, it endeavors to tailor practical solutions suitable for the specific circumstances in Northern Cyprus, drawing insights from the experiences of the countries examined during the literature review. The importance of identifying and comprehensively documenting EPs cannot be overstated, as this information is pivotal for informed decision-making regarding their management. Therefore, it is imperative for Northern Cyprus to address this issue systematically, emphasizing the careful collection of data on EPs across the entire region. Collaborative data exchange with Southern Cyprus is a viable proposition to gather comprehensive data for the entirety of Cyprus, enabling the implementation of sound management decisions. Embracing a circular economy perspective is of paramount significance in the decision-making process for managing EPs. This entails exploring opportunities to utilize EPs in the production of related products, aiming to minimize environmental harm—an approach already evident in practices such as recycling car batteries and certain computer components.
