Summary

This Portuguese-language review examines how microplastic pollution directly and indirectly threatens sustainability, analyzing impacts on biodiversity, food security, human health, and the circular economy, and discussing policy and behavioral interventions.

This study aims to demonstrate how microplastic pollution impacts the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), highlighting the relationship between inadequate plastic waste management and global sustainability, health, social equity, and environmental protection challenges. A theoretical review based on academic literature was conducted to identify and analyze the connections between microplastic pollution and the SDGs. A qualitative analysis was performed to map the intersections between pollution and each of the SDGs, focusing on socio-environmental impacts. The study addresses a theoretical gap in the literature that integrates microplastic pollution and the 17 SDGs, an area that is still underexplored. The academic relevance lies in showing that combating microplastics requires a systemic and multisectoral approach. The results indicate that microplastics directly affect several SDGs, such as SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), and SDG 14 (Life Below Water), among others. The elimination of these pollutants is essential to achieve global sustainability goals. The main theoretical contribution was the creation of an interdisciplinary approach that connects plastic pollution with global sustainability. Methodologically, the study provides a comprehensive analysis of public policies and integrated solutions. The research emphasizes the importance of collaborative actions to reduce microplastics, with direct social implications for public health and environmental preservation of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems.

Efectos de los microplásticos en el medio ambiente: Un macroproblema emergente

This review (written in Portuguese) summarizes the environmental effects of microplastics, noting that 300 million tonnes of plastic are produced annually with millions entering rivers and oceans. It highlights the irreversible ecological damage microplastics can cause to organisms with limited adaptive capacity.

Impactos clínicos, sociais, tóxicos e ambientais causados pela exposição contínua e sistêmica de microplásticos no ecossistema brasileiro

This Brazilian review examines the clinical, social, toxic, and environmental impacts of continuous systemic microplastic exposure in the Brazilian ecosystem, noting that 8.3 billion tons of virgin plastics have been produced globally. The authors discuss how plastic fragmentation into microparticles threatens Brazilian biodiversity, food safety, and human health through multiple exposure pathways.

Consumo Irresponsável E Destinação Final Inadequada Dos Resíduos: Uma Revisão Narrativa

Not relevant to microplastics research; the title refers to a narrative review on irresponsible consumption and improper waste disposal in Portuguese, though the abstract has been incorrectly populated with a microplastics health review — this is a data error in the record.

"mi̇kroplasti̇k Atiklarin Neden Olduğu Makro Problemler: Sürdürülebi̇li̇r Yöneti̇m Yaklaşimi"

This Turkish-language review (with an English abstract) provides an overview of microplastic pollution as an emerging global environmental and human health problem, covering sources, distribution, and the need for sustainable management strategies including recycling and reducing single-use plastics. While primarily a summary of existing evidence, it emphasizes that regulatory action is urgently needed to tackle the scale of microplastic contamination across marine, freshwater, and terrestrial ecosystems.
