AI summary Read the abstract
This dataset presents results from a computer model estimating how much micro and macroplastic from clothing and shoes moves through production, use and waste stages each year, and how much reaches soil, water and air. It compares a scenario without extra measures to 15 possible measures aimed at reducing these emissions. Further details are available in RIVM report 2025-0152.

This Dutch report by the RIVM assessed microplastic fiber shedding from synthetic clothing during wear and washing, finding that wastewater treatment plants remove 50-90% of these fibers but significant quantities still reach surface waters. The report recommends joint action by textile manufacturers, consumers, and wastewater operators to reduce microplastic fiber emissions.
Potential measures against microplastic emissions to water
AI summary Read the abstract
This Dutch environmental report reviewed practical measures to reduce microplastic emissions to water from a range of product categories and industrial processes, evaluating their technical feasibility and expected impact. It provides a policy-relevant framework for prioritizing interventions to reduce microplastic pollution at the source.
Modelling microplastic fibre emissions from synthetic textiles: An Australian case
AI summary Read the abstract
Researchers modeled microplastic fiber emissions from synthetic textiles across Australia, estimating emission quantities, identifying geographic hotspots, and tracing fibres to their environmental receiving compartments. The model found that domestic laundry is the dominant emission source, with most fibres ultimately reaching wastewater treatment systems or water bodies.

Microplastic pollution in agricultural soils and abatement measuresa model-based assessment for Germany
AI summary Read the abstract
Researchers modeled microplastic concentrations in German agricultural soils for the year 2020, using emission data from sources including sewage sludge, mulch films, and tire wear, and assessed the likely effectiveness of different abatement policies. The model found that microplastic concentrations in German farmland soils are already substantial and will increase significantly without targeted intervention.
