Environmental education in motion
Original title: Educação ambiental em movimento

High school students in Brazil took part in a three-session program combining physical education with environmental lessons, including an activity where they collected improperly discarded plastic waste on campus while learning about microplastics and their effects on the environment and human health. Researchers reported increased student engagement, cooperation, and awareness of waste and biodiversity issues following the activities.
ABSTRACTENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION IN MOTION: A PEDAGOGICAL INTERVENTION INTEGRATED INTO PHYSICAL EDUCATION AT IFMG BAMBUÍ CAMPUS This study aimed to develop and analyze an Environmental Education intervention integrated into Physical Education classes with 3rd-year students of the Integrated High School at IFMG Bambuí campus. The structured pedagogical intervention was carried out over three meetings, combining theoretical and practical activities focused on understanding socio-environmental themes. In the first meeting, concepts related to climate change, urban afforestation, and the impacts of human actions were discussed, followed by an orienteering activity that involved collecting tree seeds across the campus. The second meeting addressed the issue of microplastics and their effects on the environment and human health, culminating in an orienteering activity aimed at collecting improperly discarded plastic waste. In the third meeting, the collective planting of the class's "mini forest" took place, consolidating the educational process. The results demonstrated student engagement, strengthened cooperation, and increased awareness of the biodiversity present in the school environment, as well as greater sensitivity to the impacts of consumption and improper waste disposal. The practical experiences expanded the participants' understanding of the relationship between bodily practices and socio-environmental responsibility. It is concluded that the integration between Physical Education and Environmental Education fosters meaningful learning and contributes to the development of critical and transformative attitudes, reinforcing the school's role in educating individuals who are conscious of contemporary environmental challenges. Keywords: School Physical Education. Climate crisis. Environmental Education.

The effect of environmental health education on microplastic pollution awareness
AI summary Read the abstract
This study found that environmental health education significantly increased students' awareness of microplastic pollution. The results suggest that incorporating microplastic-related topics into school curricula could help young people understand the health and environmental risks of plastic pollution. Raising awareness early is an important step toward reducing microplastic exposure at the individual and community level.

Researchers surveyed 146 high school students in Gravataí, Brazil, on their awareness of microplastic pollution and then conducted a hands-on bioplastic production activity as an environmental education intervention. Results showed that approximately 71% of students had limited prior knowledge of microplastics, and the practical activity significantly improved awareness and motivated behavioral reflection about plastic consumption.
Microplásticos no corpo humano: um percurso investigativo no ensino médio para despertar a consciência ambiental

This experience report describes a secondary school investigative didactic sequence in Brazil on microplastics in the human body, guiding 10th-grade students from initial hypothesis through flipped classroom activities to experimental investigation. The project successfully engaged students with environmental science and raised awareness of personal microplastic exposure.
Turning the tide on marine litter through an interdisciplinary ocean literacy programme for student empowerment
AI summary Read the abstract
Portuguese researchers taught students about ocean plastic pollution and microplastics using hands-on activities like building sculptures from beach trash and testing games—not just textbook lessons. The program boosted kids' knowledge about plastic pollution (like how long it takes to break down) and made them more likely to say they'd personally use less plastic, though it didn't change their broader attitudes overall. This matters because microplastics are increasingly found in our food, water, and even bodies, and educating the next generation early may help build lasting habits that reduce this pollution before it accumulates further in our environment and food chain.
Microplastics in the Environment: Raising Awareness in Primary Education
AI summary Read the abstract
This study developed and evaluated a microplastics education program for primary school children, finding that age-appropriate lessons about plastic pollution could meaningfully increase students' environmental awareness. The authors argue that early education is a key component of long-term plastic pollution reduction strategies.
