Source Identification of Microplastics via Natural and Anthropogenic Impacts
Summary
This review identifies and distinguishes natural and anthropogenic sources of microplastics in the environment, examining how different origin pathways—from industrial discharge to atmospheric deposition—produce MPs with characteristic size, shape, and polymer distributions that can be used for source attribution.
Microplastic pollution is one of the most pressing environmental issues facing the globe today. Indiscriminate production and use of plastic have created many environmental nuisances and human health hazards. Microplastics (MPs) get dispersed into the environmental compartment through the degradation of large plastics. So, source identification of MPs is the first need to control this pollution. Therefore, this chapter aims to highlight the source identification of MPs along with the natural and anthropogenic impacts on MPs generation. This chapter’s first section will focus on the types of MPs and their possible sources. After that, the impacts on terrestrial, atmospheric, aquatic as well as on human beings will be discussed in this chapter. Consequently, research efforts will be given to emphasize the natural and anthropogenic impacts on MPs generation and their reduction strategies. Researchers can use this study to formulate new policies to regulate MPs generation. It is necessary to conduct additional research to determine the MPs threshold concentration and to develop restrictions based on the results.
