Proposal for a pilot site-based communication strategy on plastic pollution

Journal of Ecotourism 2026
Laura Cutroneo, Sarah Vercelli, Marco Capello

Summary

Beach cleanups often miss the tiniest plastic bits, which are the ones most likely to break down further and enter the food chain, including seafood we eat. This paper proposes a strategy to get beachgoers directly involved in picking up small plastic litter by first testing and analyzing what's actually on a specific beach, then using those real results to create a more convincing, local call to action. The idea is that showing people concrete evidence from their own beach makes them more likely to help, filling a gap that professional cleanup crews can't cover alone.

Study Type Environmental

Plastic pollution is a global problem that also affects coastal areas. Plastic litter is often found on beaches, especially in case of high tourist numbers. Public and private beach managers play a very important role by daily removing objects left behind or lost by beachgoers, as well as litter beached by storms and currents. However, the smallest plastic items are not collected during the clean-ups and therefore remain in the environment. This study proposes a communication strategy centered on small plastic items to promote responsible environmental behavior amongst beachgoers. The goal is to directly involve beachgoers in removing plastic items from the beach, in support of the daily clean-up activities carried out by beach operators. The strategy aims to be site-specific, scientifically based, and is divided into (a) plastic sampling on a designed beach; (b) laboratory analysis of the plastic items; (c) creation of a specific information package based on the designed site and obtained results. The purpose of involving sampling and analysis is to make the message more tangible for beachgoers and more effective. An example of the possible application of the proposed strategy is presented here, starting from the case of a beach in Cyprus (eastern Mediterranean Sea).
