Scientists tracked tiny plastic particles (smaller than 1mm) as they moved through a Japanese river estuary and found that tides play a big role in pushing these microplastics out to sea, though some get temporarily trapped in a layer where fresh and salty water meet. This matters because it shows rivers are a major highway for plastic pollution reaching our oceans, where it can enter the food chain, and eventually end up on our plates through seafood.
