Dataset and analysis code for a systematic review of microplastics across non-soil terrestrial systems
Summary
Researchers combed through 266 scientific studies on microplastics found in non-soil land environments (like air, dust, and plants), organizing what we currently know and don't know about where these tiny plastic particles show up and how they've been studied. This isn't a study of health effects itself, but rather a roadmap of the existing evidence, useful for pinpointing gaps, like how much research actually connects microplastic exposure to human health outcomes versus simply detecting their presence in nature.
DATASET AND ANALYSIS OUTPUTS — microplastics non-soil terrestrial systematic review All files in this deposit are original research artifacts produced by the authors: MPs_extraction_dataset_273records.xlsx The curated data extracted from all screened reports (273 records). The master source for the analysis. MPs_reanalysis_266_v4_1.R The analysis script (R 4.3.3). Reads the analysis-ready dataset, applies the five documented reconciliation removals and two record-level corrections, and produces every tabulation in the /output_tables folder. MPs_reanalysis_266_v4_1_RUN_LOG.txt Console log, corpus counts, R version and package versions from the run. v4.1_output_tables/ (31 CSV files) Every table produced by the analysis script: publication year, geography, polymers, morphology, human evidence, research focus, method presence, reporting completeness and the per-record polymer/shape audits. The review synthesises 266 reports available to 22 May 2025, distinguishing environmental surveillance (n = 158) from experimental evidence (n = 108). All analyses use explicit multi-response denominators; no meta-analytic pooling was performed.
