Daily Microplastic Exposure Self-Check: High Everyday Contact Rates and Limited Awareness in a Cross-Sectional Survey

Recent studies have raised concerns about micro- and nanoplastic effects on skin barrier function, inflammation, and aging. Education and awareness remain limited. We conducted a single-timepoint self-administered survey (N = 94) measuring self-reported plastic-contact behaviors in the previous 24 hours alongside same-day skin ratings and awareness questions. Respondents reported a mean composite exposure score of 6.37 (max theoretical ≈15). Plastic-packaged personal care products (71%) and food/beverage packaging (69%) were the most common exposures; only 7.4% reported zero food/drink packaging contact that day. Approximately 43% rated their skin as fair or worse. No statistically significant association was observed between same-day exposure scores and skin ratings. Awareness of environmental skin health and microplastic effects was generally low, and proactive checking of products was uncommon. The findings highlight widespread multi-source daily contact and an awareness–behavior gap. Longer-term monitoring studies combining exposure tracking with objective skin measures are needed.
