Characterizing the heterogeneity of microplastics in products from the anaerobic digestion of wasted food
Summary
Researchers tested leftover food waste that had been broken down into "digestate", a nutrient-rich material often turned into fertilizer, and found it contains varying amounts of microplastics, tiny plastic bits that can slip in from packaging and other contamination during food collection. This matters because if this digestate is spread on farmland as fertilizer, those microplastics could end up in soil, crops, and potentially our food supply, though this study focused on measuring the plastics rather than testing health effects. More research is needed to understand how much of this plastic contamination actually reaches our plates and what that means for our health.
