Plastic Pollution and Global Warming: Integrated Approach to Develop Policy-Based Solution
Summary
Plastic pollution and climate change aren't separate crises—making and disposing of plastic releases greenhouse gases that heat the planet, while a warmer world can make plastic waste harder to manage. This review paper argues that tackling both problems together (through stronger recycling laws, better waste-management technology, and public education) is more effective than treating them as unrelated issues, which matters for reducing environmental and plastic exposure that can affect ecosystems and human health. Since this is a summary of existing research rather than new experiments, it offers policy recommendations rather than new data on health effects.
Plastic pollution and global warming are often considered separate issues, yet they are inextricably linked in numerous ways. Both issues occur throughout the terrestrial and marine environment, which ultimately affect ecosystems and species. Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from plastic pollution contribute to climate change. Plastic processing and use generate significant amounts of GHG, and reducing plastic use is an important intervention in addressing the climate crisis. Therefore, addressing plastic pollution and global warming requires coordinated and synergistic policy interventions at local, national, and international levels for promoting sustainable development and fostering resilience in vulnerable communities. Although the linking factors between global warming and plastic pollution have been well studied, a holistic approach to addressing both issues is essential for long-term sustainability. Hence, this chapter identifies the current challenges and factors inhibiting the mitigation of both problems at the same time, with recommendations for an integrated approach for policymakers, stakeholders, and scientists. The integrated approach encompasses a range of strategies, including legislation and regulations to reduce plastic consumption and promote recycling, investments in innovative technologies to manage plastics, and public awareness and education initiatives.
