Holistic Analysis of Floating Debris in Thailand's Chao Phraya Tributary: From Community Source to Sink

Researchers studied trash floating in a river in Thailand and found that most of it was plastic, especially single-use items like bags, bottles, and food packaging thrown out by nearby communities. This matters because plastic waste that ends up in rivers often flows into oceans, where it can break down into microplastics — tiny particles that have been found in our food, water, and even our bodies. The takeaway: better waste management habits at home, plus designing products with less plastic from the start, could help cut off this pollution at the source before it becomes a bigger problem for both ecosystems and human health.
Many rivers are polluted by plastic waste. Municipal waste management is a key factor in eliminating riverine plastic debris. However, waste management action plans for communities living near riverbanks are often not well implemented. This chapter aims to (1) understand the sources and pathways of debris moving to major water bodies, and (2) gain insights into the gathered waste and the adjacent society’s waste management habits. In the current waste context of selected communities in Thailand, plastic was the main polluting material found in urban rivers. Single-use consumer items made up the largest contribution. Understanding the composition of the collected waste, we gain more insight into people’s behavior toward municipal waste management at the household and community level. Finally, reducing plastic usage from the early stages of product design should be achieved to alleviate river waste and its resulting carbon footprint.
