Techno-Integrated Waste Management and Circular Economy: An Empirical Analysis from the Indian Context

India is drowning in trash faster than it can manage it, and this study looks at whether smart tech—like AI, sensors, and blockchain—can help track and recycle waste more effectively. The findings suggest these tools can improve efficiency, but they only work if the country also fixes gaps in infrastructure, policy, and public habits. This matters because uncollected plastic and e-waste don't just pile up in landfills—they break down into microplastics and toxic chemicals that can contaminate water, food, and ultimately end up in our bodies.

Rapid industrialization and urbanization have escalated waste generation, particularly in emerging economies such as India. Traditional waste management strategies struggle to match this pace, resulting in environmental degradation and public health concerns. This paper examines the integration of advanced technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), blockchain, and data analytics into waste management systems and their role in enabling circular economy principles. It also presents empirical data from India on municipal solid waste, plastic waste, and e-waste generation, alongside treatment and recycling capacities. Findings indicate that techno-integration can significantly bolster circular loops by improving efficiency, traceability, and stakeholder participation, but challenges in infrastructure, policy implementation, and public behavior remain. The study concludes with recommendations for augmenting techno-integrated systems to meet national sustainability targets. India faces an unprecedented waste management challenge due to rapid urban growth, changing consumption patterns, and industrial expansion. Municipal solid waste (MSW), plastic pollution, and e-waste streams have surged, overwhelming existing disposal and processing infrastructure. The circular economy framework—focused on reduce, reuse, and recycle (3R) principles—promotes sustainable resource use and minimized waste generation.
