Parturient Mothers' Knowledge and Its Association with Microplastic Exposure (abundance, Shape, and Size) in Transplacental Blood

Introduction: Amidst escalating global plastic pollution, the potential for maternal-fetal transfer of microplastics has become a significant public health concern. This study investigates the relationship between maternal knowledge regarding plastics and the characteristics of microplastic contamination in transplacental blood within the Indonesian context. Aims: This research to evaluate whether the level of knowledge among parturient mothers regarding plastic materials influences the abundance, morphology, and dimensions of microplastic particles detected in transplacental blood. Methods: Transplacental blood samples were collected from 52 parturient mothers. Microplastic particles were isolated and characterized based on their quantity, shape, and size. Maternal knowledge levels were assessed via standardized questionnaires. Statistical associations were analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis and Chi-Square tests. Results: The mean abundance of microplastics across all samples was 4.23 particles/mL, with a mean particle size of 24.57 μm. Statistical analyses indicated no significant association between maternal knowledge levels and microplastic abundance (p = 0.458), morphology (p = 0.370), or particle size (p = 0.426). However, descriptive trends revealed an inverse relationship, where lower knowledge levels corresponded to higher particle abundance and larger particle dimensions. Conclusion: No statistically significant association between maternal knowledge levels regarding plastics and the abundance, morphology, or dimensions of microplastic particles identified in transplacental blood.
