Abstract The rapid growth in plastic production and consumption has resulted in significant environmental pollution and ecological imbalance worldwide. Conventional plastics, primarily derived from petroleum-based resources, are non-biodegradable and can persist in the environment for hundreds of years, causing long-term environmental damage. In response to these challenges, biodegradable plastics have emerged as a promising and eco-friendly alternative due to their ability to decompose naturally through microbial activity.This research paper examines the various types of biodegradable plastics, their production methods, mechanisms of degradation, and environmental impacts. It further analyses their advantages and limitations in comparison to conventional plastics. Additionally, the study critically evaluates the potential of biodegradable plastics to replace traditional plastics in the context of sustainable development. The findings suggest that while biodegradable plastics offer significant environmental benefits, their effectiveness depends on proper waste management systems, technological advancements, and supportive policies.
