Detection of Microplastic Fibers in Black Soldier Fly Larvae Meal

Scientists found tiny plastic fibers hiding inside black soldier fly larvae that were raised on household trash — larvae increasingly used as animal feed and even considered for human food. This matters because if these bugs are eating our plastic waste and absorbing microplastics, that plastic could be working its way up the food chain into livestock, fish, or eventually us. More research is needed, but it's a reminder to think carefully about what "sustainable" food sources are actually being fed before they end up on our plates.
This research aims to provide data on microplastic accumulation in Black Soldier Fly Larvae (BSFL) cultivated on Household Waste from a landfill in Rajgurunagar, Khed, Pune. The techniques used to digest the organic matter of BSFL include Base Digestion and Wet Peroxide Washing (using Fentons Reagent) to digest the organic content of BSFL. To perform the Base Digestion, 40ml 4M KOH solution with 5ml 30% Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2) Solution was used, and to perform the Wet Peroxide washing, 20ml 0.0353M FeSO4.7H2O with 20ml 30% H2O2 solution was used. The digested mass was filtered through stacked sieves of 150 micron and 300 micron, and the material collected on the sieve was analyzed using a compound microscope to observe the undigested microplastics. Results have been reported as pictures taken from the same compound microscope.
