Preparedness for crises depends not only on accurate information but on a population’s readiness to receive, integrate, and act on it when threat materialises. Speculative fiction and foresight have long been treated as anticipatory tools, analogous to vaccines that build immunity before exposure, yet the conditions under which such imagination-based methods succeed or fail remain unclear. This paper proposes Mental Vaccination as a four-parameter framework for assessing the inoculation effect of speculative and foresight media on crisis preparedness. Drawing on inoculation theory, the Extended Parallel Process Model, construal-level theory, and research on AI sycophancy, the framework identifies four parameters: formulation, duration, host immunosuppression, and route of administration. A dynamic model expresses the competition between a vaccination effect V and the creeping erosion C of a threat, indicating when anticipatory preparation fails to keep pace. The model is assessed against two historical cases: the Silent Spring–DDT precedent, where V kept pace with C, and microplastics, where high invisibility and long incubation suppress readiness. Host immunosuppression—a variable systematically neglected in inoculation theory—emerges as the primary determinant of whether anticipatory exposure translates into timely and accurate crisis response.
