Landfills and the facilities that sort and process our trash (called mechanical-biological treatment plants) may be releasing tiny plastic particles called microplastics into the environment, according to this research. Since microplastics can end up in soil, water, and eventually our food and bodies, understanding where they come from—including our waste disposal systems—is an important step toward reducing our exposure to them.
