Parasitological diagnosis and identification of foreign matter in Lactuca sativa L.

Researchers checked lettuce sold at supermarkets and outdoor markets in Brazil and found that every single sample was contaminated with something unwanted—bugs, mites, microplastic bits, or other debris—and nearly half contained parasites linked to diseases like intestinal worms and amoeba infections. Since lettuce is usually eaten raw, this means washing your greens thoroughly (or cooking them) really matters, and it highlights a need for better food safety checks from farm to store.
Improperly handled foods may become vehicles for the transmission of infectious diseases, as contamination can occur at some point along the production chain, leading to public health problems. Leafy vegetables, such as lettuce, may become contaminated due to leaf arrangement, which favors the adherence of endoparasites and foreign matter, thereby acting as a vehicle when consumed in natura. This study aimed to diagnose parasites of One Health relevance and to identify foreign matter in lettuce marketed in supermarkets and at the open-air market in the municipality of Assú, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. Nine lettuce samples were collected from seven supermarkets and two market stalls. First, a foreign-matter survey was conducted by examining the edible portion of the nine samples using a binocular stereomicroscope; subsequently, parasitological diagnosis was performed using flotation and sedimentation techniques in triplicate, totaling 27 replicates. Data was expressed as relative frequencies. The association between positivity and sampling site was assessed using Fisher’s exact test (p = 0.0833), and the Shannon diversity index was used to evaluate parasite diversity, adopting a 5% significance level (p < 0.05). All samples (100%; 9/9) showed contamination by foreign matter, including: unidentified extraneous particles, mites, microplastics, insect morphological parts, live insects, and larvae; and parasites were detected in 44.44% (12/27) of the assays: Ascaris spp., Taenia spp., Entamoeba spp., Eimeria spp., and Trichuris spp. In conclusion, the analyzed lettuce samples presented contaminants that may negatively affect population health, indicating the need for sanitary surveillance measures throughout production and marketing.
